   He may have as long as a two week period where he can not write. After that you should get letters. Eventually he will work up to getting to use the pay phone. After he starts writing you may want to send him a prepaid phone card.

   Probably not. When I left for training we only got a 30 second phone call to tell our parents or husband or wife that we arrived safely. I literally only said “mom, i’m here, i’m safe, have to go.. bye”. But don’t worry. Once things wind down after the 1st week or week& a half, he’ll get time to sit down and write a few letters to loved ones from home and eventually they’ll allow them to have a longer phone call home.

   When my boyfriend went to basic about a year before I did, he loved when I wrote him long letters and sent him pictures. So if you can, send him a picture with every letter he gets (they like to show them off to their battle buddies/shipmates). Write lots of letters, even if you only get a few from him, and if you like to doodle, doodle on the pages! My bf loved that.

   My Fiance left January 12th and I got a phone call from him on the 14th. It lasted about 2-3 minutes. It was enough time for him to give me his address and ask how our little girl & our dogs were. It was the hardest phone call I have ever recieved. He finally got to call again about 2 1/2 weeks later! He just started to be able to write letters too! So, Im going to say.. definitely within two weeks. If you need to chat or anything, feel free to send me a message. I know how tough it is.

   The difficult days are in the first 2/3 weeks. It’s a strange world, a fresh lot of faces around you, some not nice. When you stabilise you remember your “Girl”. God, how you want her right now . . that’s when the first letter gets written . . and what you need is that address of his . . . . the envelope will probably have S W A L K across the rear flap . . . . and there you’ll be . . . all relaxed . . . yearning.
   I won’t say anymore because you need to contemplate and experience your coming joy.

   I got a phone call saying he arrived the next day. It was long enough for him to repeat something he was supposed to resite to me and then he hung up. I didn’t get to have an actual conversation with him until about the 3rd/4th week even then it was about 4 minutes long. It was so hard.
