Question by HP123: 4th pregnancy…I have unbearable pain in my pelvic/pubic bone, in my butt muscles, leg numbness?
Before you start off with, sounds like normal pregnancy pain, this is not normal pain, it is nearly unbearable. My pubic/pelvic BONE not muscles, my butt, especially my left “cheek” hurt so bad I can barley walk and feel like I may collapse from standing or walking. About 5 weeks ago I started having some numbness in my left thigh if I would stand for long periods of time but this past week it has been almost constant that my thigh is numb and tingly. (Only my left leg not the right). I have asked the doctor he gives me the same story, oh its normal, blah blah, blah. This is my 4th pregnancy and I had the “normal” back/butt/pelvic pain with each…this is not like that. I still have almost 5 weeks to go and don’t know how I am going to make it! I know soon I won’t be able to walk at all, as it is sometimes I crawl around the house already!…lol…yup, it looks funny!
Anyone else have this before? What was it and how did you handle it? I have 3 kids and a husband that need me!

It’s probably the baby that has moved down. I have the same problems with my leg, my right thigh gets numb when i stand for a long time, especially shopping, it’s kinda scary b/c this didn’t happen the other times. My doctor just says it’s normal…ughh… Goodluck to you, your almost there!

  1. Is the pain something that has started in early pregnancy or just in the later? If its something that just started it could be from the weight of the baby, maybe you have a pinched nerve. That what it sounds like to me.I had similar pain from a pinched nerve but I wasn’t pregnant. If it presist I would go to the emergancy room or another dr.Hope you get better.

  2. I had something to similar to that with my 3rd pregnancy, although not as extreme as what you are describing. My doctor explained as with each pregnancy you lose muscle in your lower region so there is no support for you growing belly. I bought a pregnancy belt that supports your stomach and helps lift some of the weight. The belt goes under your stomach and straps on your back. It relieves alot of the pressure on your lower back as well. Get lots of rest, and if possible get the little ones and your husband to help out more around the house for you!

  3. ask to see a different doctor / explain it to your midwife when you wee her next, tell them that it is REALLY bad and you are worried. I never had anything like that in either of my pregnancies, I really hope that all is okay and it passes at somepoint.

  4. It sounds like the baby is putting pressure on one or more of your discs in your lower back. It is causing you to have the same symptoms a person with a ruptured disc would have. I have two ruptured discs and I know how unbearable they can be. I was very worried about my back when I got pregnant because I was told that pregnancy could worsen the symptoms.

I would recommend that you go to a reputable chiropractor for pain management. If you think your pain is beyond that, you need to see an orthopedic doctor who can put you on a physical therapy regimine. In the most severe cases, you should see a neurologist. Since you are having numbness in your leg (which indicates one of the discs is “pinching” a nerve), a neurologist might be the way to go. They can also recommend physical therapy and pain management options to see you through your pregnancy.

  5. Yup…I hate to say it, but it is normal..I had it from about #4 on…My left thigh would go numb…then, I would have the shooting pain in my leg..If I were to go grocery shopping, I would need to stay down all day just to get through the store! Try getting on all fours and rocking..This is the only thing that helped…Good luck!

  6. It really probably is more “normal” than you think. You just didn’t have this kind of “normal” with the others. Probably something is being pinched-maybe by the baby’s weight or maybe by your own body being “out of whack.” I would suggest a chiropractor. Honestly. Find one that has worked with pregnant women and go in and get straightened out. They could also probably provide you will some good prenatal stretches/exercises. If not ask your OB. I was given a print out of some at my last appointment. Hang in there. You know well that this will NOT last forever! :)

  7. I’m no doctor but here is my diagnosis-The pain in your butt could be from your sciatic nerve, the one running down my right butt cheek just about takes me out when it pinches. I almost hit the floor every time. The pelvic pain could be your baby pressing on it, and the numbness in your leg could be the baby pressing on a nerve. When I was about 36/37 weeks with my first I could barely stand from all the pressure and pain from her weight and all the weight I gained. I would have to stop and sit down cause I would feel like my legs would come out from under me.

  8. Symphysis Pubis Diastasis. Also, in addition to this misery, it sounds like your baby is pressing on your sciatic nerve – which can be quite agonising. My sister-in-law ended up on crutches for the latter part of her second pregnancy, practically unable to walk. Funnily enough, she was fine again during her third pregnancy. Guess it’s a case by case thing. So yes, normal I’m afraid. Good luck.
